First Aired: May 14 2012 CBC News has learned that the Canadian military has decided to use "virtual reality therapy" in a pilot project to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. The new therapy method puts soldiers in a computer-animated situation that recreates the specific incident that left the soldiers traumatized. A therapist then helps the soldiers to work through their memories. It is estimated that 17 per cent of Canadian soldiers who did dangerous patrols outside of their base in Afghanistan, and who are now home, are reporting symptoms of PTSD. |

www.onlinedermclinic.com In this tutorial, Kevin St.Clair MD discusses the treatments available for this common skin infection. Visit our "virtual clinic" at OnlineDermClinic.com for more free dermatology tutorials. Key Points *Benign (noncancerous) growths of the skin caused by infection with a virus *Often multiple; vary in appearance and location *Treatment options are numerous because no one type of treatment works well Warts (verruca vulgares) are universal, caused by infection by viruses from the family of human papilloma virus. They may occur on any part of the body, but predominate on areas typically exposed to repeated minor trauma, such as the hands, feet, knees and elbows. Occurring either singly or more frequently in multiples, they are flesh colored to pink and present with a rough scaly surface. Most people contract wart virus during their youth. They are harmless, although at times may be quite a nuisance because of physical discomfort or objectionable because of their appearance. Untreated,Viral warts may persist for years, but usually do eventually regress. Warts in the groin area are known as condyloma accuminatum or Genital warts. Differential Diagnosis (Other conditions with similar appearance) *Callouses/corns *Lichen planus *Squamous cell carcinoma Common Warts are usually easily recognizable, but when located on a palm or sole and covered with thick scale may resemble a callous or corn. The possibility of squamous cell carcinoma should be ... |

Agoraphobia, a common anxiety disorder in Australia, is defined as the fear of being in situations from which escape might be difficult. As standard exposure therapy is not bereft of weaknesses, this study comprised an innovative form of treatment: virtual reality based exposure therapy which was appraised in the framework of a controlled study involving 18 agoraphobic participants. Virtual reality allows them to interact in specific 3D computerised worlds. Results from self report questionnaires, behaviour tests and physiological measures demonstrated the overall therapeutic effectiveness: mood was improved, anxiety and avoidance behaviour lessened, the fear towards agoraphobic situations reduced. Seeking to transform physical rehabilitation for seniors, La Loma Care Center in Litchfield Park, Arizona, recently started using the first-ever "virtual" rehabilitation system for aging adults called the OmniVR™. This technology, the first one in the West Valley, is making the rehabilitation process more fun and exciting for residents. The OmniVR™ uses a sophisticated 3D camera and specialized computer software to capture a resident's image and convert it to an "avatar" that is introduced into a game-like environment. The image is then displayed on a large monitor where a resident can view their activity. With the assistance and supervision of a therapist, residents take part in a variety of interactive exercises and activities selected for the individual's specific condition or physical challenge. The programs focus on strength, balance, mobility, walking, endurance and memory. Unlike off-the-shelf video game systems, the OmniVR™ was developed specifically for people with physical limitations. It's much easier for elderly patients to use, featuring simpler graphics and eliminating the need for hand-held controllers. The software is designed around positive reinforcement, rather than a win-lose scenario. Equally important, the system is focused on professional therapy applications rather than the recreational focus of traditional systems. Minutes after her OmniVR training, Judy, an occupational therapist, introduced Ruth, a short-stay resident with dementia, to the ... |

bit.ly VERT creates a three-dimensional (3-D) environment that replicates a radiation therapy treatment room, projected on a screen. It uses state-of-the-art, rear-projection technology to project interactive 3-D images onto a screen 14 feet tall and nine feet wide, in the school's Kinder Foundation classroom. VERT produces captivating, life-size graphics and tracks the movement of the participant, enabling students to visually move around a patient to practice complex procedures. The system also can be configured for different brands of linear accelerators. This gives students an advantage if they pursue a career at another hospital that uses a different brand. Wearing special 3-D goggles, students can practice their clinical skills in a safe, less intimidating environment before they step into an actual clinic. "VERT is a virtual representation of a radiotherapy treatment room," explains Shaun Caldwell, assistant professor, School of Health Professions. "It's an amazing tool that's revolutionizing the way we teach radiation therapy." |
